  • Ryan Wheat, Supervisor/Operator

The purpose of the project was to create a wave feature for kayaking. There were many additional components to the project. To maintain existing FEMA floodplain standards, extensive grading of the channel was required. For habitat considerations, several rock clusters were installed. Rock terraces were installed along the banks to provide bank protection as well as recreational opportunities for people.

There are listed salmonids in the work area, so all work areas had to be completely isolated and cleared of fish. Staged dewatering was required to encourage fish to move out on their own. Turbid water was contained and pumped to settling basins to settle and infiltrate. Several diversions were required as the project had two live channels entering the work area that had to remain open to fish passage throughout construction.

The low flow channel had a 60’ width. In the area of the project, the Salmon River is split into two channels. We used several hundred bulk bags to divert the flow out of the channel we were working in and down the other channel. 4,660 tons of boulders were installed in the project. 2,975 cubic yards of material was excavated from the channel to even out grade and create an inner berm.
